Killer Whales Weekly Message
May 18, 2009
Message from Coach Maya:
Due to the cold weather we will not be starting SV Swim Team practices tonight! The coaching staff is looking forward to the first day of practice tomorrow night Tuesday, May 19th. Our website is up and running with all information you really need to know.
If you are new to the team, please try to attend one of our new parent meetings (on Wed 5/20 or Thurs 5/21 at 7:00 at the pool). Bring any questions you may have.
Please make sure you arrive at least a few minutes before your scheduled practice. This way you will be sure to hear the coaches gather your age group for practice. I realize the water and air temperature may be cold the first week or two of practice. Please make sure that you bring a warm change of clothing (sweat shirt and pants for after practice) and extra towels so that we can try to make the most of practice. The 6&unders especially, may not be moving as much and will need to have a towel around during practice. Remember too, that the pre-swim team and 6&unders will practice together the first week (mon-fri) so that we can assess and place your child accordingly (and this placement can change at any time). For those on the swim team before, we will try to keep them moving as best we can. We understand that some swimmers will be able to cope with colder temperatures better than others. On cold days, it would also help if your swimmer did not come to practice wet, as we begin each practice with a little stretching and probably instruction the first week.
I would like to see all swimmers that have long hair either put it up in a ponytail out of their face or better yet, wear a swim cap. You may not realize this, but bad habits can form when swimmers are trying to get a breath of hair but can’t due to hair in their face. For practice, any swim cap can be worn.
Big Whales is a program created where swim team members 11&up can become a mentor to swim team members 6&under or any new 7-8 yr old members. Because we ask for Big Whales to assist swimmers (especially 6&unders) during the Tuesday night meets, please do not sign up for this program if you think you will miss many meets. There are usually plenty of volunteers. Look for more detailed information on this to come shortly.
If you are planning on missing a meet, on being late to a meet, or need to leave a meet early, please, please sign your swimmer(s) out for each meet on the bulletin board at the pool by listing their name and age group (for being late or leaving early, include time information as well). Failing to do so may jeopardize a relay team and cause unhappy teammates (not to mention the problems it creates for the coaches and meet volunteers). This needs to be done by the Sunday night prior to every meet.
In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me at mayaress@nc.rr.com.
