Note from the coaches...
Practices are going well and the swimmers are all working hard. The effort has really been strong and I am looking forward to the meets. Our Red/White meet is this Thursday, June 12th. Please have your swimmers come to the pool for the team picture before warmup (by 4:30). Even if you do not want any individual pictures, I would like to see a better TEAM picture that represents more of our team (please encourage your swimmers to be a part of the team picture event- we do have many 11&over swimmers, so let's make it look that way!). Individual pictures begin at 3:30. All pre-swim and swim team members are invited to be in the team picture and then swim in the red/white meet (pre-swim team will only swim freestyle). The meet will begin with a medley relay for all age groups, then freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. We will not be running the freestyle relay at the end. ALL SWIMMERS THAT HAVE LONG HAIR SHOULD WEAR A SWIM CAP.
Each swimmer is assigned a unique number and that number is written on their upper arm for each swim meet. Numbers for each swimmer will be posted by Wednesday night on the bulletin board. Numbers will ensure that your child gets their time for each meet. Therefore, it is important to be legible and use permanent marker to write their number on both arms.
Swim suits did not arrive yesterday as scheduled, but are supposed to be in today. Please check with the coaches at practice today if you ordered a suit.
Big Whale/Little Whale - Coach Eric has been working on assigning all 6&under and new 7-8 swimmers a Big Whale. He will have the list posted on the bulletin board by Wednesday's practice. Please make sure your child makes the effort to meet their Little Whale at the red/white meet.
What's for Dinner on Thursday? The concession stand will be open for business selling their full menu (drinks, candy, popcorn, ice cream, pretzels, etc) AND we will have pizza by the slice and hot dogs for sale.
Bake Sale at Red/White Meet - Attention 6 and under parents - please bring individually wrapped non-melting goodies such as brownies, bar cookies, cupcakes, rice crispy treats, salty snack mix, chilled fruit, etc. for the Bake Sale. Each package will be sold for 50 cents. Please deliver the items to the Bake Sale Table near the pool entrance when you arrive. If you have any Bake Sale questions, please call Barb Smiechowski at 306-0093 or barbara422@yahoo.com. (Note: All food sales are fundraisers for the pool and the swim team - so come hungry & eat up!)
Volunteers signed up for Red/White Meet – Please check in at the Volunteer table behind the lifeguard desk to get your nametag and to be entered into the raffle. We will be raffling off 3 $10 gift cards for local businesses at each meet (including the Red/White meet) for the parent volunteers working that night. If you have any questions about volunteer opportunities (or would like to increase your chances of winning by volunteering for more jobs, please call Tracey Lovejoy-Johnson at (919) 387-3326 or email her at TraceyLovejoy@downtownraleigh.org
A Note on Weather – Safety is a major concern for SV and summer is full of weather related safety issues. We have very detailed plans in place on how to proceed in the event of a weather delay. Please show up at the meet at the proper time even if it seems that weather may impact the event. The TSA representative makes decisions on delays or rescheduling based on several factors. Please call the hotline at 363-4411 for weather delay information. A lifeguard is on duty during the swim meet to watch for inclement weather. In the event of lightning/thunder, the lifeguard will sound a siren/horn. This is to alert swimmers & parents to clear the pool deck. We are asking that all families go to their car and wait until we sound the “all clear” signal. Please do not leave the meet. The presence of lightning and/or thunder results in a 20 minute delay from the last occurrence.
Thursday morning June 12th will be the beginning of morning practices. Please remember that we have more space in the morning practice, so plan on attending then if you can. During morning practices, there is absolutely no one allowed on the deck other than those scheduled for practice and the coaches. There will be 2 coaches scheduled at every practice.
On Saturday, June 14th, we will be having another clinic. Originally scheduled as a "stroke" clinic, we are making a change. I feel as though we are able to teach the strokes well during practices. The plan for this Saturday is another clinic to focus on starts and turns. There will be 3 clinics this Saturday. The first is from 9:00-9:30 and will be for those swimmers that are NOT diving at all, or not diving off the block only. The second clinic 9:30-10:00 will focus on improving starts (those already diving off the block). And, the clinic 10:00-10:30 will focus on turns for all strokes (11&up only). The clinics will be $3 (bring money Saturday morning), and signups will be posted by Tuesday, June 10 at 5:00.
On Tuesday, June 17th, we are swimming at home against Cary Swim Club. Please remember that we leave the parking lot for visiting teams. Plan on arriving at the pool at 4:45 to get setup and warmups begin promptly at 5:00. After the meet, the team will be going to the Apex Ice Cream shop.
Please remember that the coaches work very long hours putting a meet together on Sunday nights at 7:00. If you do not sign your child out by the Sunday before the meet, there are many changes that need to be made (not always so easily). The signup sheets are posted at the pool for ALL meets. Check your calendars today and sign up if you know your child will miss a meet.
Our invitational swim meet for this year is the S.W.I.M. on July 13th at Sunset Ridge. We have won the meet for the last 2 years, so let's all plan on going back! For this meet, there are entry fees to be paid for each event. The relay costs will be paid by the team. Entries are due to the coaches (with money) by Friday, June 27th. Swimmers 10&under swim in the morning and 11&over swim in the afternoon. Swimmers 7&up can swim 3 events, while 6&unders can swim 2 (they swim 25 yds at this meet- the entire length). Entry forms for this meet will be available on our website shortly...
Got Spiritwear? Pick up your pre-ordered spiritwear items from the spiritwear table (located near the water fountain) on June 10th, 12th or at the home meets. Don’t forget to buy tattoos, buttons, t-shirts, shorts, bags & hoodies to show your “Killer Whale” Spirit.
Going Krogering? Please remember to use your Kroger gift cards (and reload them often) when you shop at Kroger. The swim team receives 5% of the reloaded amount. If you need a new card or your first card, please email Kelley Stephens kelleystephens@nc.rr.com
Note from TSA rep:
