Killer Whales Weekly Message
July 21, 2008
Tuesday, July 22nd - The LAST swim meet of the year! Can you believe it?! The Killer Whales will be visiting Wellsley. Be at the pool ready to swim at 5:30.
The Wellsley Waves have issued us a challenge - With the cost of basic food staples increasing at a rapid rate, hunger is a real problem faced every day by many in our community. Families are struggling to put food on the table and food banks are struggling to keep up with the demand for their services. At Tuesday's meet, our swim teams can have a small part in helping bridge that gap. Here is the challenge -- which team can donate the most Peanut Butter or Jelly in one evening. I have no doubt SVST’s generous spirit will prevail. So go to your pantry and add a jar of PB or J to your swim meet bag and drop it off at the entrance of the Wellsley pool. There will be a Wellsley and a Shepherd's Vineyard representative on hand to take your donation. We will announce the winner at the end of the event. If you'd rather donate cash or check (made payable to Western Wake Crisis Center), each $5 will count 2 jars.
Here is message from the Wellsley TSA rep:
What side of the pool is the visitor’s side? Is there any shade? The visitor’s side is on the right as you enter the pool. You will have three covered shade shelters and you will not need to bring tents. This area of the pool has adequate shade. We ask that you not bring chairs onto the “pool deck”. We will provide chairs for kid pushers for your half of the pool area, but we do not allow chairs for the swimmers or parents on the pool deck. (Our team will not bring chairs in either). Parents will have plenty of room in our “shaded” parking lot to set up chairs. You can see the pool from this area of the parking lot and you can hear the announcers 1st and 2nd calls for swimmers. This rule allows plenty of room for parents to see their kids swim without having to navigate around deck chairs. If you have a parent, grandparent, or guest that needs a chair for medical reasons, we will certainly allow a chair on the pool deck for this reason.
Is there reserved parking for visitors? If not, are there rules about parking on 1 side of the road, etc.? As you enter Wellsley on Widdington Lane, the entrance to the pool will be just ahead on the left. Turn into the parking lot and the right side of the parking lot is reserved for Kildaire Farms. These spaces will fill quickly. The left side of the parking lot will be roped off and this area is where we allow parents (and swimmers if desired) to set up there own chairs. We will post no parking signs in the neighborhood if an area is off-limits to parking.
Directions Wellsley is located in west Cary along High House Road between Davis Drive and Hwy 55. The pool is located at the intersection of High House Road & Widdington Lane. If traveling west on High House Road, pass Widdington Lane and go 1 block to make a U-turn at Cranborne Lane. Drive east back to Widdington Lane and turn right. The pool is immediately on the left. From Hwy 55, head east on High House Road. Widdington Lane will be the 2nd road on the right. Turn right on Widdington Lane and the pool is immediately on the left.
What kind of food is the concession stand serving?
BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Meatball Sandwiches
Chicken sandwiches or wraps
Hot Dogs
Baked Potatoes
Pizza
Nachos
July 23rd - The SVST Banquet is Wednesday! We are asking for volunteers to help with set-up and clean-up. We need to dismantle 400+ chairs, set up approx. 45 tables, and position 300+ chairs around them, etc. Decorating the tables will not take long after everything is set up. Please be at Hope Chapel at 4:00 pm on Wednesday. Can’t come at 4:00? I can arrange for volunteers to stack chairs earlier in the day….please email Joy Wilkes at jtwilkes@bellsouth.com Clean up will includes wiping down the chair seats, re-stacking the chairs, sweeping and mopping the floor. Luckily, there is another swim banquet the next night at Hope Chapel, and we will not have to set up the chairs again.
The banquet begins at 6:00 and the buffet line will begin at 6:05. Our goal is to finish the banquet in a record-setting 2 hours. (We like to set new records!)
A message for our coaches & older swimmers:
I'm Doracy Harrison, Program Manager at Triangle Aquatic Center. As the summer begins to wrap up from a great swim season, instructors and guards look for new places to take their skills...and I'm looking for them! We especially need *swim instructors*, even for *August classes,* so please let your coaches and older swimmers as soon as possible that they can talk to me about teaching.
Flyer and application attached to post/distribute for instructors. If guards are interested, they can apply online at http://www.triangleaquatics.org/AboutUs/Employment/EmploymentApp.php?EmpApp=TAC.
Thanks for your help,
Doracy
